Pamu: Hey, Viru how are you doing?
Viru: Great and you ?
Pamu: Good…but I am finding it very difficult to give time to myself.
Viru: and why is that?
Pamu: My job.. schedule is very hectic. I leave in the morning, work for the whole day and them come back in the evening. By the time I arrive, I feel very exhausted. I remain with almost no energy to do something different or things I find happiness in or basically those things which I love.
Viru: Then you should try to find different job, where you would able to find time for yourself and your family.
Pamu: That is not the solution. I have already changed numerous jobs. Same is the case with almost all that I have tried.
Viru: Then what do you want?
Pamu: I want to know why is it so? Look, it seems a kind of slavery to me. We just go to our jobs daily. Then when we are done with our job we come back to our home if we are living with them or else some other place where we are residing. Then there we try to have some entertainment, food and then go to sleep.
Viru: Ha.. that is true for almost every sector. I firmly believe it is slavery.
Where you join some company whichever it is, then agree to sell yourselves in exchange of some monetary or other gains. It makes our life very robotic.
Pamu: Ha.
Viru: But that is not all. There is much more. Like nowadays we have numerous means where we pass our time. For instance we have numerous social media platforms, online entertainment media and so on. There are media where most of the people take refuge to relieve their stress.
Pamu: Atleast they help us provide refuge..
Viru: Refuge ha… you are then misguided..
They rather perpetuate our slavery.
Pamu: And how is that?
Viru: They keep us engaged just like drugs or alcohol do. It keeps us away from reality. We take satisfaction by engaging in the virtual world, where people are not original, rather virtual. They try to mask their identities. They feel happy if they get numerous likes and feel bad if the case is otherwise.
Pamu: But, what is bad in it?
Viru: I am not saying it is bad. What I have said is just my experience. It is upto you whether to accept or not.
What I feel is that such media be it social media or OTT platforms, and other online entertainment means keeps us distractedly engaged. What happens is that there I’d we find refuge, time passes too swiftly. Have you experienced that?
Pamu: Ha…but that is what helps me in having some relief.
Viru: Ha that might be the case with you. No problem . It is with the majority of the people.
Look what happens or at least my experience is that when we are away or basically offline from such media then atleast in my case, mind gets space to wander be it good, bad or else. It allows us to scrutiny ourselves, our priorities and so on. Basically it forces people to think, which itself is very difficult task.
It is natural tendency which we got on inheritance, to avoid what is difficult and choose easiest path. And here, online or virtual world seem to be most attractive and very easy to access. And now with digital revolution it has become vital part of life or rather I would say it has become life itself.
Now let’s come back to job.
Pamu: We need to do that. If we won’t do that, how will we able to survive? We will have no means for survival we need food, shelter and other basic necessities. Without money we cannot have those needs fulfilled.
Viru: True. Exactly we need to work to have our necessities fulfilled. But is social media or other virtual media our necessity?
I don’t believe so.
Pamu: I contradict you here. Entertainment is our necessity to have fulfilled life.
Viru: True, it is our need. But you need to have entertainment which makes you feel fulfilled. The type which you are advocating is energy draining. I never feel fulfilled..it is mere consumption of the content.
Look, human is a social animal. We need to have contacts, gossips and so on. But on virtual world we talk…..but what it lacks is humanness that we get when we face each other.
Pamu: Ha.. that may be true. People mostly mask their true feelings when engaging.
Viru: I have always believed that people use language not to express their feelings, rather to hide what they truly are.
Pamu: So, basically we are slaves is that you are saying.
Viru: Yes we are. As an employee you give your time to your firm, which in turn pays you for your work or penalize you if you commit mistake. Then you remain engaged on one platform or the other for the sake of entertainment. We even refuse giving time to our family members, relatives and friends. Entertainment or rather consumption of the content which keeps us blissfully engaged becomes our priority.
Pamu: Ha.. that is the fact. Even my family complains against me on that issue.
Viru: Then you tell me what are you?
Pamu: Unlike earlier I can be called as modern slave.
Viru: That is the case with the majority of the people. It is not limited to that. There is much more. Like we have become slaves to materialistic pleasures, like we keep accumulating things needlessly, primarily due to influence of the advertisement industry.
Pamu: Hmm ..the are so seductive. When we unable to buy we feel jealous. Many resort to borrowing beyond their means just to buy that needless thing just to show off.
Viru: Exactly.. that is also the type of slavery.
Pamu: Then what should we do.
Viru: Look practically speaking we are so deep in this slavery. It is very difficult, though not impossible to come out.
For that we need to know our true nature that is meditate on self. Spending time with self, allow the mind to wander. Here we need to embrace the boredom and alone time, there in solitude our true nature will start to come on surface.
Also when we wish to engage with someone we should prioritise face to face conversation, rather then virtual talks.
Pamu: But what about money?
Viru: Look we all should do some work. It is better here to find one where we feel fulfilled rather then drained. Or we should explore ways to monetize or start work by ourselves where we find happiness and realize our nature. It is risky but worth trying.
Pamu: Hmm.. you at right. I will do my best to come out of this slavery. Hopefully others will realize and would attempt to break shackles of the slavery.
Viru: Ha.. sure. All the best to you.
